Real-Time Recommender Systems

We have developed a Recommender System to provide a unique tourist experience in Smart Cities. Our first prototype was tested in Saint John, NB Canada. In total, 40 Estimote beacons were used for collecting user event data during the summer. Our mobile app can send ‘mobility context aware’ recommendations to tourists in real time. For example, if a nearby museum is already full of visitors, the app notifies the tourists so they can make a decision of postponing their visit or heading there immediately. Another example includes if a tourist is interested in visiting Reversing Falls, but the weather forecast is rain within an hour, the app notifies the tourist and suggests indoor activities such as shopping, dining or visiting a museum.
